L3 Micreo awarded Defence production contract for SILVERSHIELD systems

Australian Minister for Defence Industry, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC, visited L3 Micreo today to announce the award of a production order from the Australian Department of Defence (DoD).

The award, under the REDWING counter-improvised explosive device (IED) program, is for the production of over 14,000 SILVERSHIELD vehicle-mounted counter-IED force protection systems. The total value of this contract is AU$30M (approximately US$21.3M), a significant win for the company, with all units to be delivered by the end of the year.

The Australian designed, developed and manufactured SILVERSHIELD systems are the latest evolution in vehicle-mounted systems and they allow the deployment of a high volume of low cost units to protect against remotely triggered IEDs for the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF).

Addressing L3 Micreo staff at our Brisbane facilities, Minister Reynolds said the capability would make a real difference to the lives of our Afghan partners, providing them with confidence as they continue operations against determined insurgent and terrorist groups.

“The REDWING program is a successful collaboration between Defence and industry, and SILVERSHIELD further demonstrates Australian industry’s ability to meet the challenge of high volume and time-critical manufacturing.” Minister Reynolds said.

“The Program is part of Australia’s broader commitment to Afghanistan’s long-term security and development.”

Sarah Earey, L3 Micreo’s Managing Director, said, “We’re honored to welcome Minister Reynolds to L3 Micreo today to announce the award of this SILVERSHIELD production order. We are extremely proud to be responsible for the continued production of these life-saving force protection systems that are being deployed to address the persistent and evolving threat of IEDs in Afghanistan.

“Utilising a predominantly Australian-based supply chain and an additional 12 employees at L3 Micreo, we produced the first 16,000 SILVERSHIELD systems last year. We are pleased to hear that these systems are being successfully deployed in Afghanistan and are confident that the supply of this second lot of SILVERSHIELD will continue to save lives.”

Following delivery of this latest order, working in conjunction with Defence, we will have produced and exported over 200,000 individual and vehicle mounted REDWING systems to the ANDSF. The REDWING Program was a nominated finalist for the 2018 Essington Lewis awards in the 2017 Minor Sustainment category.
